About David Rohall

David Rohall, Ph.D.
Military Sociologist | Author

David Rohall created and maintains this website as part of a long-running collaborative research project on Millennials’ and Generation Z’s views of the U.S. military. While the project itself is a joint effort, he leads the ongoing analysis and development of content for the site and serves as its primary public-facing voice.

I study military service, war, and the ways individuals make sense of their experiences within military institutions. I am a Professor of Sociology at Ohio University and a veteran of Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Much of the content here draws from survey data collected over more than two decades from cadets at U.S. military academies, ROTC programs, and civilian college students. My role is to interpret these data, connect them to broader sociological questions, and present them in a way that is accessible to both academic and public audiences.

In addition to this collaborative work, I am currently developing a book project, The Last Conscript, which examines the experiences of conscripts during the Vietnam War and explores the broader social meaning of compelled military service. I am also working on a second project, 100 Hours War, focused on the experiences of Desert Storm veterans.

My work is shaped both by academic research and by my own experience as a Marine Corps veteran. I am particularly interested in the stories of enlisted service members and how their experiences are remembered, interpreted, and often overlooked.

If you are a veteran interested in sharing your experiences, or if you would like to learn more about this work, I welcome you to get in touch.
